The pumpkin had been well designed, loved and worked over for an hour. It took seven seconds for it to rise into the air and be slammed into the ground. The chunks of it spilling out across the asphalt. The whoops of the two teenagers rang out across the empty street.
The teenagers were of the most annoying kind. The ones that thought they knew everything and were thus capable of doing anything. They thought they were being funny but for the most part, people thought that they were being general nuisances.
It didn’t have to be mischief night for them to be rude and terrible. It was just the excuse. They were being quite rude as a young woman their age passed by. She had been dressed as a sexy witch. Short skirt and orange and black striped socks. She walked past them.
“Hey, honey, can we go back to your place?” one of the boys called out.
She stopped, which he hadn’t planned on.
“Why not?” she asked with a flutter of her eyelashes.
He hit his cohort and the two of them started following her. They were trying to chat her up but she didn’t say anything. They didn’t notice that they were leaving for a more deserted neighborhood. The two of them ended up in front of a large house that would have looked spooky if they had been paying attention. They only had eyes for her and her curves. They didn’t notice the broken and cracked windows. The shutters that were barely holding on.
She walked up the walk and they followed her through the door. When they got inside, she swept away from them and they noticed how dark it was. Finally, taken out of their lustful haze.
“I love Halloween,” she said her voice calling out from not the living room. “As do the children. They put so much work into their pumpkins and you smashed them. Just like that. Plus, I hear that you’re not well loved in this town.”
“Where’d you go?” one of them asked.
“Are we going to do it or not?” his cohort said.
The room seemed to be getting darker. They reached for the doorknob but there was nothing there. They stepped forward and there was only a dim light.
“You thought that you were going to get me, the treat,” the woman’s voice said echoing against invisible walls. “But the children have such a trick for you.”
All around them appeared the smiles of children, their teeth shining in the dim light. They then drew their sharp, little knives and they shined just as bright. Well, for the moment before they got stained, dark and red.
No one ever saw the boys again.
No one ever particularly cared.
